Former/Defunct
[edit]Hi All- I'm wondering what the difference is between "former" and "defunct" railways. In particular, when should a railway be described as former versus defunct in a short description? Pencilsforall (talk) 04:44, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
- Pencilsforall Hi, sorry for the late reply. I think I prefer defunct for railways that are no longer operating, track removed etc as opposed to former. This is entirely my personal preference and not rooted in any Wiki policy or guideline. My rationale is that the word former can also apply to something that still exists, but used to be, or was called, something else: Leeds and Bradford Railway (now largely the Airedale line), or RAF Church Fenton, now Leeds East Airport. Although, I bet I have contravened myself somewhere and used Former rather than Defunct. Regards. The joy of all things (talk)
- I do like that definition - defunct = has ceased to exist; former = has been absorbed into / has become... Another way to express the later more clearly would be "previously known as..." 10mmsocket (talk) 18:04, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- We also have synonyms like disused, abandoned, unused, closed, shut, etc. Love it when English has too many synonyms, can't agree for other languages. I think its just whatever the editor chooses. JuniperChill (talk) 18:46, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

Czechoslovak class 475.1 steam locos
[edit]I have been reading about these 4-8-2 locos, "arguably one of the most technically advanced steam locos of the post WW2 years". Apparently a further 25 were built for North Korea in 1951.
We don't seem to have an article on them - or have I missed one by another title? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:29, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains/Recent changes
[edit]I formally propose that we automate link updates or shut down the Recent changes subpage, most links have not been updated there in 18 years. Cards84664 20:23, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

- I suspect that some time in 2006, Slambo (talk · contribs) decided that it was too much of a task to keep maintained. We could send the whole set to WP:MFD. --Redrose64 🦌 (talk) 21:37, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'd rather it be marked as historical rather than deleted if it isn't resurrected. Thryduulf (talk) 23:00, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- It seems like it should be a relatively easy bot job to update from Category:All WikiProject Trains pages. However, I'm not sure if there's any bot set up to do that. Do any other Wikiprojects use this style of recent changes tracking? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 22:00, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- There are lots of WikiProjects with Recent changes pages in their space, but at first glance all appear defunct. Some examples from the first couple of pages of my search results:
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Current activity - marked as historical, last regularly updated 2015
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Lists of pages/Articles - last updated 2022, last regularly updated 2013
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Arizona/Arizona recent changes - last updated 2009
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Texas A&M/Recent Changes - just transcludes Special:RecentChangesLinked/Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Texas A&M articles by quality log
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Food and drink/Wines task force/Recent changes list - a list of links to special:recentchangeslinked for each category of the project's articles, the list was last updated in 2007.
- No project appears to have as many subpages with "recent changes" in the title as WikiProject trains does. More than one directs readers who stumble upon the page to look at Article alerts, although this does a different (if related) job.
It seems like it should be a relatively easy bot job to update from Category:All WikiProject Trains pages.
I agree. If there isn't a bot that currently does this, then it seems like it will be pretty straightforward for someone with the appropriate skills to create one. Generating lists of pages is almost always regarded as a non-controversial bot task. Thryduulf (talk) 23:27, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
